Start 2019 in a greener fashion with these easy swaps…
After increasing attention in 2018 on ocean plastics and the pressing urgency for individuals to stand up for the planet, why not start the new year as you mean to go on by assigning yourself some green New Year’s Resolutions that will help you achieve your sustainable lifestyle goals? Here are a few feasible ideas to get you started on how you could begin 2019 with a more environmentally-friendly agenda:
Bring Your Own
Whether it’s a plastic bottle, a bag, or a coffee cup, we all have a reusable item in the back of our cupboard, so dig it out and USE it! Plastic ingested by animals results in the death of 100,000 turtles and one million seabirds every year, according to Reuse this Bag. By using a bag for life, a reusable coffee cup, or a reusable water bottle you will have an impact in reducing this number.
Veganuary, Veg-eighty or even Meat Free Mondays
Consuming less meat is an easy way to have a more sustainable lifestyle, so why not go all the way for January and try vegan. If this seems like too drastic a change why not try Meat Free Mondays or ‘Veg-eighty’ – a term I like to use referring to people who are vegan about 80 percent of the time. If going ‘cold turkey’ (no offensive pun intended) seems a bit much right now, trying to slowly cut out all the meat and dairy you can, swapping your chicken curry for chickpeas, and your cow’s milk for oat, could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by livestock by 50 percent!
According to Gyres we use 500 million plastic straws a day globally, but these are all too small to be easily recycled. This new year, you can take a pledge to refuse a straw and help reduce single-use plastic one drink at a time! Several establishments have now also replaced these with paper straws, but consumers seem to still be resisting the idea. If you’re not ready to ditch the straw and you’re a slow drinker you probably don’t want your straw to sag by the time you’re halfway done, so why not consider investing in a portable reusable straw?
During the holiday season a lot of people tend to forget about recycling and its importance. They also forget how easy it is! As a New Year’s Resolution, why not vow to simply commit to recycling – sort out your bins, know what can and can’t be recycled, where and when.
Trying to buy an item from an ethical or sustainable brand each month is a simple swap that can have a big impact. Obviously if you don’t intend in buying anything anyway then don’t buy what you don’t need – but if you do need new clothes or accessories (for example), then an eco-friendly new year’s resolution could be trying to source these items from more sustainable or ethical brands (have a look on our website for some ideas).
A good place to start with this is presents – help your friends have sustainable lifestyles too, by pledging to buy all their presents from sustainable or ethical brands – such as jewellery, clothes, cosmetics, etc.
There are plenty of other ways you could change your routine to be more environmentally conscious, but these are just some easy swaps that anyone could commit to as New Year’s Resolutions, to help them lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
