They say that there is nothing more effective to bring people together than hating on the same thing, and if there is anything worth collectively hating on is the use of single-use plastics.
The now ubiquitous ‘ditch the straw’ movement that took social networks and media headlines by storm in the last couple of years has seen smug influencers, conscious celebrities, and do-gooders alike pledge to refuse plastic straws in a bid to reverse its negative effects on wildlife and the environment.
In the UK, we dispose of roughly 8.5 billion plastic straws every single year. That’s about 130 straws per person, per year – a significantly higher number than the rest of the EU.
Plastic not only is made from fossil fuels, meaning it has a massive carbon footprint, but it also lasts for up to 200 years, pollutes our oceans killing marine life and entering our food chain through a number of ways.
Refusing a straw at the counter is a very sensible thing to do, and although it might only be a drop in the ocean (pardon the pun), it is a small step in the right direction. So next time you fancy a post-work tipple or catch up with your friends over a drink (or many), why not consider a few of these straw-free bars:
